Researchers from Stanford University and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University have discovered that a compound found in sea squirts, called plasmalogens, reversed several signs of aging in aged mice. The study, conducted with collaboration from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, showed improvements in memory, brain connections, and even hair growth.
The research team found that dietary supplements containing plasmalogens, a type of lipid abundant in the brain, heart, and immune cells, improved learning and memory in aged mice. Levels of plasmalogens naturally decline with age and are also reduced in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, leading researchers to investigate their potential to protect the brain.
Professor Lei Fu, the corresponding author of the study, stated: “Our research suggests that plasmalogens may not just stop cognitive decline, but may reverse cognitive impairments in the aging brain.” In addition to cognitive improvements, the mice receiving plasmalogen supplements exhibited visible physical changes, growing thicker, darker hair. The researchers believe the compounds may encourage brain regeneration and protect aging synapses. This work represents the first detailed look at how plasmalogens may influence the aging brain.
