Samsung executives Hee-Cheul Moon and Seungki Choi expressed confidence ahead of Apple’s anticipated entry into the folding phone market, emphasizing the importance of device weight for customer satisfaction. The company has focused on reducing weight in its Galaxy Z Fold8, achieving a 75-gram reduction over seven years.
Samsung’s Advanced Mechanical R&D Group head, Hee-Cheul Moon, stated the company feels “very proud” that other brands are acknowledging the value of foldable technology. Seungki Choi, head of Samsung’s Smartphone R&D Group, and Moon discussed the company’s efforts to improve the design and usability of its folding phones. They noted preorders for the latest models increased 30 percent globally, with the Fold8 accounting for nearly half of those orders.
According to Moon, “The key to providing the highest customer value in this market is all about the weight of the device. As you know, it’s not easy.” Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 currently weighs 201 grams, lighter than the 214 grams of the Galaxy S26 Ultra and anticipated to be lighter than Apple’s rumored iPhone Ultra, which is expected to weigh between 230 and 241 grams. Customer and YouGov survey data from 2024 indicated that a bulky design was a primary concern for those uninterested in folding phones.
Samsung achieved weight reduction in the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra by meticulously analyzing 270 components and 180 auxiliary parts. Changes included redesigning the printed circuit board to remove unnecessary circuits, eliminating 15 auxiliary parts, and machining the internal display support plate down to 0.2 millimeters. The company also developed “Flex Titanium,” a titanium alloy film designed to maintain screen flatness and durability. The latest model also features a streamlined camera system with fewer rear cameras.
