Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s recently dismissed defence minister, has publicly called for a presidential election to be held despite the ongoing war with Russia. This marks the most direct political challenge to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The 35-year-old Fedorov made his appeal in a YouTube address on Tuesday, though he did not directly reference Zelenskyy. His call for a return to democratic voting comes after martial law, put in place in February 2022, suspended elections. This is the first instance of a major Ukrainian political figure publicly advocating for elections under the current circumstances.
While the timing of Fedorov’s statement is notable, No right-leaning outlets were found to have reported on this development.
