ReactOS developer Ahmed Arif “SidiHmeed” has successfully implemented the FEX emulator, enabling the open-source operating system to run Windows x64 games on ARM64 hardware. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the ReactOS project, which aims for binary compatibility with Windows applications and drivers.
The experimental ReactOS ARM64 build, designed for 64-bit ARM hardware like Raspberry Pi single board computers (SBCs), now supports running Windows x64 games and applications through FEX. The ReactOS project described this as a “massive milestone.” A demonstration video posted to X showcased Super Mario 64 running via this setup.
In addition to the FEX integration, Ahmed Arif has also enabled ReactOS to run on the older Raspberry Pi 3, complete with custom Ethernet and WiFi drivers. This work complements previous efforts to support the Raspberry Pi 5. ReactOS has been running on real ARM64 hardware since earlier this year, and continues to mature with these latest developments.
