Lifetime Labs has released Privacy Notes, a Markdown-first note-taking application with built-in encryption and features beyond standard note-taking. The application aims to keep user documents safe by providing client-side encryption before uploading to servers hosted in Switzerland. Lifetime Labs offers a lifetime price of $48 for 500 MB of encrypted storage, with additional storage available for $4.80/GB per year. The application is open source, with code available on GitHub, including web, desktop, and mobile clients, as well as encryption and threat model details.
Privacy Notes differentiates itself by offering a vault for storing sensitive information like passwords, SSH keys, and credit card details, similar to password managers like Bitwarden and Proton Pass. Users can also generate and save new Ed25519 SSH keys and passwords, and import passwords from browsers or other managers. The application also includes a task management feature, utilizing checklists within notes.
According to Lifetime Labs, their motto is to provide software, but “NOT as a service.” This is reflected in the lifetime pricing option. The application’s features are designed to be a comprehensive solution, merging note-taking with secure storage and task management.
