Phuong Mai Nguyen is opening the Cannes Critics’ Week with her animated film “In Waves.” The story follows shy teenager AJ, who falls in love with Kristen. Kristen loves to surf, and as their bond deepens, AJ slowly begins to appreciate the sport as well.
But “In Waves” is not simply about surfing. Nguyen indicated that she initially felt distant from the subject matter. “Before making this film, I didn’t have much of a connection,” she stated. The director also addressed being intimidated by the real-life story that inspired the project, as reflected in discussions around the Critics’ Week opener.
