The composite consists of seven images obtained by the Mastcam-Z instrument aboard Perseverance. It depicts Earth as a small, bright dot moving across the Martian sky, passing behind Phobos. The black background is a result of the camera’s settings and processing techniques used to capture the faint light from these celestial bodies.
The purpose of capturing this image was to document the relative positions of Earth and Phobos as observed from Mars. NASA states that the images were taken on July 2, 2026, the 1,907th sol of the mission.
