Red Hat's David Airlie has successfully implemented the Nouveau reverse-engineered kernel graphics driver and Mesa NVK Vulkan driver on the NVIDIA GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip within the DGX Spark system. This achievement required approximately 100 patches to both Nouveau and NVK.
The kernel driver adaptation involved configuring Nouveau to utilize the newer NVIDIA R610 firmware, a complex task given NVIDIA’s lack of backward compatibility for firmware images. Further modifications included reworking display code, addressing vRAM and L2 cache handling issues, and implementing Spark-specific boot and display support. The NVK Vulkan driver also received patches to manage depth/stencil and vRAM differences.
Airlie noted in a blog post that support for GB10 / DGX Spark may serve as a transitional step until the Nova driver transition is complete. He shared a screenshot demonstrating Nouveau+NVK functioning on the NVIDIA GB10. Detailed information is available on his blog.
