Newcastle United is reportedly attempting to sign Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo in January, potentially hijacking a deal previously pursued by Sunderland. Several other Premier League clubs are also monitoring the 25-year-old.
Sunderland identified Catamo as their top transfer target throughout the summer window but were unable to meet Sporting CP’s demands. The Portuguese club is seeking his €60million (£51m / $69m) release clause in full. This has opened the door for other clubs to enter the competition.
Catamo has made an excellent start to the campaign, with two goals and three assists in his first seven games. This form has attracted attention from Newcastle United, Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Brighton, and Aston Villa, all of whom have stepped up scouting efforts.
According to TeamTalk, “a number of clubs who had contact with Catamo's camp earlier in the summer have maintained their interest and stepped up their scouting of the winger in recent weeks.”
Newcastle United views Catamo as a suitable profile, given his direct play, productivity, and age. Crucially, Catamo is “more than open to the possibility of moving to the Premier League” and is “attracted by the prospect of testing himself in England.” This willingness could be a key factor in any potential deal, as January transfers often depend on player intent as much as finances. While Sporting CP currently stands firm on the £51m release clause, Newcastle is closely monitoring the situation, and Sunderland now faces increased competition for Catamo’s signature.
