Netflix U.K. Unscripted Chief Warns Against AI in Reality Shows
Netflix's U.K. director of unscripted, Syeda Irtizaali, expressed strong reservations about the use of artificial intelligence in reality television during an appearance at SXSW London on Tuesday.
Irtizaali, who was recently appointed to her position at the streaming platform, addressed an audience at the conference regarding the potential dangers of incorporating AI into unscripted television programming. Her comments highlighted emerging challenges facing the entertainment industry as AI technology becomes increasingly sophisticated.
While describing Netflix as a "tech-forward company," Irtizaali drew a clear distinction between using AI as a creative tool versus deploying it in finished productions. She explained that she was "very relaxed about people using AI as a tool to bring ideas in," suggesting openness to AI's role in the early stages of content development.
However, her primary concern centered on the preservation of authenticity in unscripted content. Speaking to the SXSW London attendees, Irtizaali warned: "It's Hard Now to Tell What Is Fake and What Is Real."
Her remarks underscore the growing tension between technological advancement and the fundamental premise of reality television, which relies on capturing genuine, unscripted moments for audiences.
