LOS ANGELES (AP), Myles Garrett, the reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year, stated his primary goals for the upcoming season are to win a Super Bowl and repeat as Defensive Player of the Year. Speaking Tuesday, just days before the Rams’ season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, Garrett expressed confidence in the team’s potential.
In nine seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Garrett achieved individual success, including eight consecutive seasons with at least 10 sacks and five first-team All-Pro selections in the last six years, but limited team success, reaching the playoffs only twice. He believes the Rams offer a better environment for sustained postseason runs, citing the team's players, coaching, and overall pedigree. “You know, if you give your best, you should have nothing to hang your head about,” Garrett said. “We have a hell of an opportunity, but that means nothing, you know, until we put it on the field.”
Garrett, who set a single-season record with 23 sacks in 17 games last season, acknowledged he may not be at full strength against the 49ers due to knee swelling during training camp, but anticipates making an impact. “We have a strong defense all around, and they'll make it easy,” he stated. “Even if I'm a touch off of what I usually am, I don't suspect I will be, but I have plenty of support.”
Teammates have already been impressed with Garrett’s abilities. Offensive tackle David Quessenberry described Garrett’s explosiveness off the line as “like nothing I've ever seen,” praising his combination of speed, power, and bend. Defensive tackle Kobie Turner highlighted Garrett’s strong work ethic, noting that his success isn’t solely based on natural talent.
