Mel Gibson has described his upcoming two-part film event, *The Resurrection of the Christ*, as an attempt to expand upon the narratives presented in the Gospels. He explained that the Gospels do not contain every detail of Jesus’ life, and his film will seek to fill in those gaps.
According to Gibson, the synoptic Gospels – Matthew, Mark, and Luke – “don’t tell you everything.” He cited John’s statement that even a complete record of Jesus’ life “couldn’t fill all the libraries of all the world.” Gibson intends to “analyze those things and make suppositions about what might have been,” not to contradict orthodox teaching but to “enhance” the existing stories.
The film’s scope is extensive, beginning with “the fall of the angels” and venturing into both Sheol, the Old Testament underworld, and “the Hell of the just, and then the Hell of the damned.” Gibson stated the narrative will move beyond Earth, even reaching “the firmament before the creation.” He described the project as containing “some crazy stuff.”
Lionsgate will distribute *The Resurrection of the Christ* in North America, the UK, and Latin America. Part One is scheduled for release on May 6, 2027 (Ascension Day), with Part Two following on May 25, 2028 (Ascension Day and Memorial Day weekend).
