NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) featured the spiral galaxy M83, located twelve million light-years away in the constellation Hydra. The galaxy, also known as the Thousand-Ruby Galaxy, is 40,000 light-years across and part of a group that includes Centaurus A.
M83’s spiral arms are defined by dark dust lanes and blue star clusters, with reddish star-forming regions contributing to its alternate name. The galaxy’s core emits x-ray energy, indicating a high concentration of neutron stars and black holes resulting from intense star formation. The image, captured by a ground-based telescope, also shows foreground Milky Way stars and distant galaxies.
