Researchers have discovered extraordinary forests containing hundreds of giant Taiwania firs in the steep, remote mountains of Taiwan. Years of expeditions utilizing LiDAR mapping and citizen-science detective work culminated in the discovery of an 84.1-meter (276-foot) tree – the tallest known in East Asia – as well as dense groupings of enormous trees dubbed “temples of giants.” These ancient forests are among the world’s most carbon-rich ecosystems.
The challenging terrain of Taiwan's mountains has provided a refuge for these exceptional forests. After years of difficult expeditions, researchers were able to map and identify hundreds of giant Taiwania firs. The team employed LiDAR mapping technology – which uses laser pulses to create detailed 3D maps – alongside contributions from citizen scientists to locate the trees.
The culmination of their efforts led to the identification of a tree measuring 84.1 meters (276 feet) tall, establishing it as the tallest known tree in East Asia. Beyond individual giants, the researchers also found areas they describe as “temples of giants,” characterized by dense concentrations of enormous trees growing together.
The discovery highlights these ancient forests’ significance as some of the most carbon-rich ecosystems on Earth.
