A new patch series aimed at improving Linux kernel build speeds, assisted by AI, may be included in the Linux 7.4 kernel release. The patches address single-threaded bottlenecks and have demonstrated significant performance gains in testing.
Lorenzo Stoakes of ARM spearheaded the work, submitting a second revision of the patches to the Linux kernel mailing list. Initial results show a 36% faster build time for kernels with all modules included ("allmodconfig") and approximately 70% faster incremental builds. Two of the original patches have already been merged into the kernel.
The second revision includes fixes, rebasing against the latest Linux Git code, and enabling a parallel front-end option for the Rust compiler. Stoakes stated that, with the changes being largely uncontroversial, he is optimistic about their inclusion in Linux 7.4. He commented, “things are hopefully looking good for getting these patches merged for the next kernel cycle, Linux 7.4.” The v2 patches are available on the kernel mailing list.
