Jordanian security forces have arrested three men in connection with a shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate on Friday that killed nine people and wounded over 40 others. The Public Security Directorate reported that the suspects were apprehended Monday following a shootout, and all three were wounded in the operation. No security personnel were injured.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya identified the three as responsible for the attack, stating, “The security services have fulfilled their duties, resulting in the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act.” He added that the suspects “put up fierce resistance” but were subdued. Authorities found firearms and ammunition in their possession. King Abdullah II has directed authorities to respond with “an iron fist” against those he termed “outlaws of Islam” and anyone attempting to undermine Jordanian unity.
While Jordanian officials have labeled the act as terrorism and attributed it to “extremist terrorists,” no group has claimed responsibility, and no affiliations with Islamist militant groups have been publicly identified. The Public Security Directorate stated, “Terrorism has no place among us,” and that the suspects had met their “just fate.” The attack occurred during a funeral in the village of Hammoud, and witnesses reported several minutes of gunfire. The incident is considered highly unusual in Jordan, a relatively stable Middle Eastern nation, though authorities say they have previously thwarted Islamist militant plots. Minister Al-Faraya indicated that authorities are investigating the circumstances that led the individuals towards extremism and will hold anyone involved accountable.
Our reading is that Jordanian authorities have responded swiftly to a rare and deadly attack on a Christian church, arresting those identified as responsible. The lack of a claimed motive or affiliation, despite the investigation, suggests either a novel actor or an attempt to obscure existing connections. The King’s directive for a forceful response indicates the government views this as a serious threat to national unity and security, despite Jordan’s relative stability.
