Director Jon Favreau is venturing into documentary filmmaking with a new National Geographic project, ‘Lion,’ in collaboration with wildlife producer Mike Gunton. The film aims to expand upon the scope of the “Dynasties” series by focusing on vulnerable and endangered species.
The renowned "The Lion King" director immediately agreed to collaborate when approached by Mike Gunton, an executive producer at BBC Studios Natural History Unit, in 2022. Gunton sought to “supersize” his “Dynasties” series, which centers around the lives of vulnerable or endangered species.
Favreau, who had never directed a documentary before, found the experience particularly intense due to the uncertainty surrounding the lead character’s survival. He described not knowing whether the central animal would survive as ‘harrowing.
