Israeli prosecutors have charged a settler, Yinon Levi, with the killing of Palestinian activist Awdah Hathaleen in the occupied West Bank last July. This marks the first indictment of an Israeli for the death of a Palestinian in the occupied territory since the October 7, 2023 attacks.
The indictment was filed in district court on Thursday and accuses Levi, who resides in the south of the West Bank, of the killing. According to Israeli rights group B’Tselem, this is the first such case brought forward since the events of October 7th. The timing of the charge – after the attacks on Israel and subsequent escalation of tensions – is notable given the lack of prior indictments in similar cases since that date.
