Ishan Kishan scored 270 runs in the Duleep Trophy final on Monday, leading East Zone to a total of 708 against South Zone. The innings, his second first-class double century, came after a 10-year gap and has bolstered his chances of returning to India’s red-ball cricket team.
Kishan smashed 270 off 334 balls (30x4, 7x6) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Kumar Kushagra also contributed with 101 runs. Kishan stated he wasn’t focused on reaching a specific milestone, saying, “Honestly, I wasn’t even thinking about 50, forget 300. I was only thinking about 50-run partnerships.” He accelerated from 200 to 250 in just 27 balls.
Kishan emphasized the importance of prioritizing the team’s goals over personal achievements. “I would rate this innings very highly because I kept the team’s goal ahead of my own runs. There were moments when I could have played more attacking shots, but the priority was to spend time in the middle, make good decisions and build a big total,” he said. He believes his time away from the Indian team and playing in domestic cricket has simplified his game.
He explained that returning to domestic cricket forces players to “start from zero,” realizing the need to outperform others to regain a spot on the national team. “When you’re playing for India regularly, sometimes you get into a flow and your growth can stagnate. Going back to domestic cricket makes you start from zero. You realise there are so many players scoring runs and that you have to perform better to get back,” Kishan said.
