Apple recently launched the iPhone 18 Pro, featuring a revamped camera system with a moving aperture and an improved thermal management design for its A20 Pro chip. While the device offers marginal image quality improvements, it is notably similar to the iPhone 17 Pro and will be followed by a foldable iPhone Duo next month.
The iPhone 18 Pro’s primary new feature is a variable aperture within the main camera, allowing control over the amount of light reaching the sensor. Traditionally, phone cameras have fixed apertures, as their small sensors and lenses typically maintain a wide depth of field. However, Apple decided to implement a variable aperture “to have it both ways,” enabling both wider apertures for low-light situations and narrower apertures for specific effects.
The iPhone 18 Pro also includes a revamped thermal management system designed to allow the A20 Pro chip to sustain peak performance for longer durations. The device offers manual exposure controls within the native camera app, a feature long requested by users. Despite these updates, the iPhone 18 Pro is priced $100 higher than its predecessor, the iPhone 17 Pro, and higher storage tiers are also more expensive. The Verge notes that if you own an iPhone 17 Pro, the 18 Pro will feel extremely familiar, and may not be a compelling upgrade unless you are a dedicated smartphone photographer.
