The Intel BFF driver functions as a Bitfix Filter reset, designed to suppress repeated logging and signaling of corrected errors. According to the source, if the Bitfix Filter is not reset, it can become overwhelmed with transient errors as processor silicon ages. By clearing these redundant errors, the driver creates space for the detection of new, potentially critical errors.
The driver is currently queued in RAS.git’s edac-for-next Git branch. Its presence in this Error Detection And Correction (EDAC) branch indicates it is on track to be submitted for the Linux 7.4 merge window, assuming no unforeseen issues arise. This suggests that Linux support for Intel’s upcoming Diamond Rapids server CPUs is largely complete. The launch of Diamond Rapids is anticipated next year.
