Ikey Doherty, founder of Solus and Serpent OS (now AerynOS) and former Intel Clear Linux team member, is embarking on a project to publicly demonstrate how a modern Linux distribution should be built. Doherty clarified he is “not making another distro,” but intends to showcase the process and build a new public package manager.
He described the effort as “declaring war on the industry,” stating the goal isn’t long-term distribution maintenance but rather a public demonstration of best practices. Doherty envisions the distribution as a blend of “Clear Linux meets Serpent,” focusing on a source-based, fully-optimized, update-friendly, and immutable system, with extensive use of the Rust programming language.
The project, currently codenamed Barney, will be chronicled through updates on Doherty’s LinkedIn and YouTube channels. His initial video outlining the plans has already been made public.
