Researchers have successfully transplanted human brain cells into mice lacking a cortex. This represents what is described as the ‘most extensive’ integration of human brain tissue into another species to date.
According to a recent report in *Nature*, the transplanted cells were brain organoids – three-dimensional structures grown from human brain tissue. The mice used in the study did not have a cortex, a critical part of the brain responsible for higher-level cognitive functions.
The research was highlighted on the September 16, 2026 episode of the *Nature* Podcast. The podcast also covered research on ancient Asian city engineering, the birth of a tsunami detected by distant sensors, and an AI tool called Paper2Agent that allows researchers to interact with scientific papers.
