Marvelous Madison, a 4-year-old filly trained by Jorge Abreu, was euthanized earlier this week after sustaining a fracture during a race at Saratoga Race Course. The horse finished fifth in the Yaddo Stakes on August 30th before exhibiting lameness in her left hind leg.
According to the state Gaming Commission's Equine Death and Breakdown Database, Marvelous Madison became “toe touching lame in the left hind leg” after returning to her barn. Further evaluation revealed a “displaced fracture,” leading to the decision to euthanize her due to a “poor prognosis.” The filly had seven career starts, achieving both of her victories at Saratoga, including an allowance race on July 26th.
Marvelous Madison’s injury was listed as “other” in the database, not specifically racing- or training-related. Since the start of the Saratoga summer meet on July 3rd, three other horses have died during training. Stirring Words, a 3-year-old colt trained by Cherie DeVaux, collapsed on the track on August 28th after suffering a cardiac event. Magic Chuck, a 2-year-old trained by Whit Beckman, was euthanized on July 19th after sustaining a left scapula fracture during a breeze. An unnamed 2-year-old trained by Todd Pletcher died on July 4th after collapsing during a gallop.
Additionally, No Doubt About It, a 3-year-old gelding trained by Wesley Ward, was euthanized on June 29th after flipping over and being unable to bear weight. Shiny New Object, trained by Chad Brown, was euthanized on May 29th after suffering a humeral fracture. An unnamed 2-year-old colt trained by Melanie Giddings was euthanized on April 24th after being diagnosed with a tibial fracture. The 2026 racing season at Saratoga concludes Monday.
