Erling Haaland scored to help Manchester City win its third straight Premier League match under new manager Enzo Maresca. Tottenham Hotspur failed to score for the third consecutive game, drawing 0-0 with Nottingham Forest.
Manchester City overcame a challenge from Coventry on Saturday, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from Haaland. Enzo Fernandez, a new arrival, assisted Antoine Semenyo, who crossed for Haaland to head home his third goal of the season. Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola, noted the importance of “ugly moments” as well as attractive play after the win. “I really liked today for different reasons,” Maresca told the BBC. “First half we could have scored one or two more, but we worked together to win, so I am happy.” He added, “It is difficult against teams in a low block, I felt we dealt very well with that. Anxiety from the fans is normal…Nine out of 10 of these games you end with bad feeling, but it is important to win 1-0.”
Fernandez started after Nico O'Reilly sustained an injury during warm-up. Fellow new signing Iliman Ndiaye also made his debut. City’s squad has been reshaped with the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva, and John Stones, and the arrivals of Fernandez, Ndiaye, Elliot Anderson, and Ayyoub Bouaddi.
Tottenham, who spent heavily in the summer transfer window, drew 0-0 at Nottingham Forest. Forest had a goal disallowed for a handball by Neco Williams after a VAR review.
