Guatemala has raised its alert level to red and evacuated 659 people from eight villages following an eruption of the Fuego volcano on Monday. The volcano, located about 35 kilometers from Guatemala’s capital and part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is Central America's most active. Authorities have declared a red alert covering Sacatepéquez, Chimaltenango, and Escuintla – areas with a combined population of around 1.6 million.
The eruption has sent lava fountains and pyroclastic flows down the volcano’s slopes, as well as ash and gas into the surrounding areas. Emergency services issued the red alert after conditions intensified Monday evening. As of Tuesday, Guatemala remained on alert following the event.
