Spanish actor Ester Expósito (“Elite”) is set to star in “Stink Eye” (“Malmirada”), the feature film debut of Colombian director-writer Cristina Sánchez Salamanca. The project is participating in Madrid’s Iberseries Co-Production and Financing Forum and also features Goya-nominated cinematographer Gris Jordana.
The drama centers on 13-year-old Nina, whose life is disrupted when her father leaves her mother for Belén, a model-influencer—a role Expósito is expected to play. The scandal impacts Nina’s mother’s well-being, leading to Nina moving in with her father and his new wife. In an attempt to gain acceptance among her peers, Nina begins stealing her stepmother’s underwear to create a black market, a process through which she explores her own identity and sexuality. The story also explores the complex relationship that develops between Nina and Belén, and Nina’s conflicted feelings towards her mother.
Sánchez Salamanca drew inspiration from her own childhood, stating, “When I was seven, my father left my mother for Miss Universe. Or well, the first runner-up. This woman was beautiful, poised, charming, intelligent and oozed sex. How can you find your own place in life when such a huge shadow is cast upon you?” She describes the project as “dark comedy body horror,” where “the horror lies in growing up as a 13-year-old girl in a world that validates women’s existence through the eyes of others.”
Sánchez’s previous work includes the short film “Bebé,” which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Festival, and a series of short documentaries for Victoria’s Secret titled “The Tour ‘23.” Her work often explores themes of alienation, identity, and the human condition. “Stink Eye” is being produced by Continente Pictures, led by Sánchez and Duván Duque Vargas, alongside Spain’s Ringo Media, run by Mireia Graell.
