Kolkata, East Zone secured their first Duleep Trophy title in nearly 14 years, a victory coach Ratan Kumar attributes to a strong team culture built on trust and camaraderie. The success wasn’t driven by tactics or star players, but by fostering an environment where players felt comfortable and motivated.
Kumar emphasized the challenge of managing athletes with international and state-level experience, stating, “The biggest thing was managing a group of top athletes from different states. When players come after performing internationally and for their respective states, coaching is not about telling them too much. It is about giving them the right environment and preparation so that their desire to perform increases.” He highlighted the importance of creating a space where both senior and junior players could openly communicate and feel valued.
The team’s unity was evident in the interactions between players from different states, with individuals like Subhranshu Senapati of Odisha actively contributing to the leadership group despite not playing. Kumar noted, “You would see Jharkhand players sitting with Bengal players…That atmosphere was very important. Teams win when they play cricket in a good environment.”
Captain Ishan Kishan received particular praise from Kumar for his leadership. “Ishan's understanding of the game is very deep. When you discuss something with him, you don't need to think too much as a coach. He reads situations quickly, plans accordingly and communicates clearly with players,” Kumar said. He described Kishan as composed under pressure, responding to situations rather than reacting, and possessing excellent communication skills.
Kumar also credited the East Zone selectors and team management for trusting young players like Kumar Kushagra, Shikhar Mohan, and Md Kounain Quraishi, who flourished alongside experienced players such as Anukul Roy and Virat Singh.
