Miami Dolphins rookie receiver Kevin Coleman Jr. recently switched his jersey number to 21 in honor of his younger brother, Rashaad, who was killed by gunfire in 2008. Coleman hopes wearing the number will allow him to keep his brother’s memory alive and advocate for an end to gun violence.
Coleman explained in the Dolphins locker room that he immediately thought of his brother when number 21 became available. Rashaad died on October 21st, 2008, after shots were fired into their family vehicle in a St. Louis suburb. Kevin, then 5 years old, and his brother were in the back seat at the time of the shooting.
“I always pray for and always wanted to put my brother’s situation out there and just lift his name up and make his legacy,” Coleman said. He expressed a desire to see a reduction in gun violence and encourage positive alternatives for young people. “I just wanna let the youth and let other people know it's other things we can do,” Coleman stated. “I feel like it would be a big thing if the world just learned how to communicate. It's dreaming about more about things we can go achieve instead of just throwing our life away.”
