Novak Djokovic is entering the US Open with a strong opportunity to make history, as key rivals Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are either absent or returning from injury. A new documentary, “The Wolf in Winter,” offers insight into the 24-time major winner’s relentless drive.
Djokovic, described as an “athlete, an enigma,” doesn’t settle for contentment. As he states in the opening of the documentary, “I cannot say I feel content with what I have and who I am. I am always looking to be more: better, faster, stronger.” The film, released last week as “Prime Video Sports Presents” and “A Film By Jason Hehir,” provides a fly-on-the-wall look at the tennis star.
The US Open marks three years since Djokovic’s last major triumph. He won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2023, falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, which prevented a calendar Grand Slam and a record-breaking 25th major title. Now, at his 12th Grand Slam, Djokovic sees a favorable opportunity.
Both Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz present less of a threat this year. Sinner withdrew due to a knee problem, having not played a match since winning at Wimbledon in early July. Defending champion Alcaraz is returning after a four-month absence due to a wrist injury, with no warm-up matches scheduled before the tournament. Djokovic practiced with Alexander Zverev on Arthur Ashe court Wednesday; Zverev is the top seed and could be a contender after winning at Roland Garros.
Djokovic is slated to potentially face Alcaraz again in the semi-finals. The draw also positions Zverev in a potentially easier half, facing Felix Auger-Aliassime. Djokovic’s Grand Slam defeats since his last title at the Australian Open 2024 include losses to Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open semi-finals, withdrawal before the French Open quarter-finals, and a loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final.
