On Wednesday, June 17, skywatchers in the United States and parts of Canada witnessed a rare daytime lunar occultation of Venus. A lunar occultation occurs when the Moon passes in front of a celestial object, briefly obscuring it. This event was the first of three occultations scheduled for this year.
NASA reported that the Moon slipped in front of Venus, creating a striking daylight moment. For those who missed this occurrence, there will be two more opportunities to observe Venus disappear behind the Moon in 2026.
The next occultation will be visible from parts of Asia, Africa, Europe, and western Russia on September 14. The final event will be visible from southern South America on November 7.
