Dave Franco actively seeks to foster positive relationships within the film industry, a practice that ultimately led to his involvement in the upcoming comedy, *Idiots*. He initially connected with director Macon Blair after seeing his film *Blue Ruin* in 2013 and later complimented Blair’s *I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore*. This outreach was motivated by a desire to build industry camaraderie and potentially collaborate on future projects.
Franco’s connection with Blair deepened, resulting in Blair sharing a script for a road comedy, initially titled *The Shitheads*. However, Franco was initially too young for the lead role of Mark Southard, a 40-something slacker. The project stalled in both 2017 and 2018 due to funding issues. Around 2024, Franco revisited the script and offered to help secure financing, having gained experience as a director and producer. He “basically been stalking Macon for the past ten years in trying to collaborate with him.”
Funding was secured in 2025, and the film, later retitled *Idiots*, began production in Georgia. Franco also contributed to casting, recommending O’Shea Jackson Jr. for the role of Davis, based on their previous work together on a Quibi series, and Mason Thames for the role of Sheridan, after working with him on a 2025 film, *Regretting You*. Franco described a particular scene involving Sheridan spiking drinks and causing “a geyser of diarrhea” as “the craziest thing” he’s done on camera. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on August 28th.
