Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning accepted responsibility for his team’s 39-31 loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday, citing a “lack of leadership.” Lanning also criticized his own decision to go for it on fourth down on his own 33-yard line, a failed attempt that effectively sealed the defeat.
The Ducks’ head coach stated the issue “begins with me,” according to ESPN. Lanning admitted the fourth-down attempt was the “wrong decision on my part.” The loss caused Oregon to drop from No. 6 to No. 21 in the AP rankings, though playoff contention remains possible.
Oklahoma State identified tendencies in Oregon’s offensive line during film study, allowing them to anticipate run or pass plays. Linebacker Tate Romney said after the game that the Cowboys “spotted tells” that gave them a significant advantage. Lanning acknowledged the team would work to correct these issues, specifically regarding the stance of quarterback Dante Moore, which reportedly also signaled play calls. Moore completed 14 of 29 passes for 191 yards with two touchdowns and was sacked four times. He did not speak to the media post-game due to needing multiple IVs, Lanning said.
Oregon will next face Portland State on Friday before traveling to play No. 12 USC in Week 4.
