The Dallas Cowboys finalized their initial 53-man roster, making a trade involving tackle Nate Thomas and placing two players on injured reserve. The team also continues to evaluate its backup quarterback situation.
The Cowboys traded swing tackle Nate Thomas to the Houston Texans for a seventh-round draft pick, the same pick Dallas used to draft him in 2024. Thomas was projected to be the team’s third tackle. Following the trade, Dallas acquired Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Broderick Jones.
Dallas placed linebacker Marist Liufau and cornerback Devin Moore on the injured reserve-designated to return list. Liufau broke his arm in the final preseason game and will require surgery, expected to sideline him for several weeks, according to coach Brian Schottenheimer. Moore is dealing with a hip injury. The NFL allows teams to designate two players for IR with the intention of returning them during the season, with a total of eight IR return slots available.
The competition for the backup quarterback position between Joe Milton III and Sam Howell remains unresolved. Both players are still on the roster, and the Cowboys may opt to carry both as backups. Owner/GM Jerry Jones stated, “That’s one that we may just split the difference and have two backup quarterbacks. I thought both guys out there did some really good things tonight. But keep in mind, quarterback, sometimes it's not the great plays, it's not making the bad plays is the biggest deal of the backup quarterback.”
The Cowboys also released guard Shiyazh Pete.
