Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed regret following his team’s Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, stating he wished they had played their starters more during the preseason. The Chargers, expected to be a playoff contender, struggled with turnovers and penalties in a 26-22 defeat.
Harbaugh attributed the loss, in part, to “preseason type mistakes,” suggesting more game repetitions for starters could have avoided them. Quarterback Justin Herbert finished with 209 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception, scrambling for 29 additional yards. While the offense started strong with a rushing touchdown, subsequent possessions resulted in a fumble, turnover on downs, and a punt.
The Chargers’ offensive struggles continued in the second half, with a blocked punt, interception, and two failed fourth-down conversions. Herbert’s interception was described as a risky throw into double coverage. The defense allowed 26 points to Jacoby Brissett and Jeremiah Love. Los Angeles committed seven penalties for 64 yards, compared to Arizona’s eight for 111.
The Chargers will next face the Las Vegas Raiders, who defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-13 in Week 1. The Raiders may have tight end Brock Bowers available for that game, after he sat out Week 1 following a knee procedure.
