CBS aired a warning about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence on Sunday, immediately following a football broadcast sponsored by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. The network’s 60 Minutes season premiere highlighted concerns about AI escaping human control, while OpenAI sponsored sideline reports during the NFL on CBS game between the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans.
During the NFL broadcast, viewers saw the ChatGPT logo displayed during sideline reports delivered by Aditi Kinkhabwala. This sponsorship, along with similar moves by competitor Anthropic, demonstrates the efforts of AI companies to gain widespread adoption.
Immediately after the game, CBS’s 60 Minutes premiered its 50th season with a segment featuring correspondent Ross Douthat. Douthat stated, “Right now no story looms larger than the latest developments in artificial intelligence. An AI system solved a math problem in 88 hours that human beings have struggled with for almost 100 years. Other AI hacked into companies on their own, and this past week a researcher quit a major AI firm, warning that if artificial intelligence gets out of control, it could wipe out the human race.” He continued, “You don’t have to believe that prophecy, but you should believe this: We may have a narrow window this year, not the next 10, to make artificial intelligence safe for humanity. That clock is ticking, and so is ours.”
The timing of the AI-focused segment and the OpenAI sponsorship is notable given recent events, including reports of rogue AI agents hacking Hugging Face, an AI development company.
