St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Blaze Jordan suffered a left ankle sprain during Thursday’s 7-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles and has been placed on the injured list. This adds to a recent string of injuries plaguing the team.
The injury occurred in the eighth inning when Jordan’s foot got caught on the base while tagging Gunnar Henderson. He was helped off the field by manager Oliver Marmol and assistant trainer Chris Conroy. Jordan was wearing a knee-high boot in the clubhouse on Friday, potentially jeopardizing his return this season, according to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat.
Jordan, who was called up on June 12 to replace Nolan Gorman, had been performing well, slashing .246/.276/.382 with three home runs and 28 RBIs in 58 games. He also led the team with four triples despite being in the 14th percentile for sprint speed. His first home run at Busch Stadium came during the Baltimore series, a three-run shot. Earlier, he hit a home run against Minnesota in his second MLB game, before experiencing a power outage until August 15 at Wrigley Field.
To fill the roster spot, the Cardinals recalled utility infielder Thomas Saggese from Triple-A Memphis. Saggese, who made the team out of Spring Training, struggled early in the season, hitting .184 with a .520 OPS in 32 games and has been optioned twice this year. He has been hitting well in Memphis, slashing .258/.340/.446 with 10 home runs, and is 9-for-30 over his last nine games. St. Louis acquired Saggese and Tekoah Roby in 2023 for Jordan Montgomery.
Jordan joins a growing list of injured Cardinals, including Andre Pallante (elbow inflammation), Hunter Dobbins (right flexor strain), Masyn Winn (left hand fracture), Everson Pereira (left hand contusion), and Peter Strzelecki (right forearm inflammation). Pallante was the first St. Louis starter to hit the IL since Sonny Gray in September 2024.
