The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has implemented a ban on songs created entirely by artificial intelligence from its official music charts, effective Friday. The decision aims to prioritize and recognize human artistry in the music industry.
The changes were outlined in an update to the ARIA Charts’ code of practice. According to the update, music produced with generative AI will no longer be eligible for inclusion on the weekly charts, which track the most popular songs in Australia. The ARIA, which serves as the trade group for the Australian music industry, did not specify what percentage of AI generation would disqualify a track, only stating that wholly AI-generated songs are prohibited.
The move is explicitly intended to “promote the human nature of artistry,” as stated by ARIA in its updated code of practice. This indicates a desire to maintain the value and recognition of human creativity within the Australian music landscape, even as AI technology continues to advance and become more prevalent in music production. The ban takes effect immediately, impacting submissions to the charts beginning this Friday.
