An armed man, identified as 38-year-old Patrick Havas, lunged at Ohio Democratic gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, injuring several people before being apprehended by security and law enforcement. According to the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office, Havas forced his way toward Acton, knocking two older adults to the ground, and was found to be carrying two handguns and a set of brass knuckles, none of which were displayed during the incident. Acton’s campaign stated multiple people were injured, while Acton herself was unharmed.
Deputies from the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and Canfield Fair Police arrested Havas, who is expected to face two counts of assault and one count of disorderly conduct. Members of Acton’s security detail, comprised of Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, intervened before the arrest. Both Acton and Republican Governor Mike DeWine confirmed Acton was unharmed, with DeWine stating he had spoken with her.
Acton’s Republican opponent condemned the attack, and communications director Connie Luck stated that candidates should be able to meet voters without fear of violence. Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident, and the Highway Patrol is reviewing whether it constituted a targeted threat. The incident occurred roughly six weeks before the November election, in which Acton is running against Vivek Ramaswamy and Rob McColley.
