Apple TV+ has secured worldwide rights to the comedy-drama ‘Small Prophets’ created by Mackenzie Crook. The series, which debuted to acclaim on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two, will launch on Apple TV+ on October 7, excluding the UK where it will arrive next year.
‘Small Prophets’ follows Michael Sleep, played by Pearce Quigley, an ordinary man working in a DIY store seven years after the disappearance of his partner, Clea. His elderly father, Brian (Michael Palin), shares an old recipe for a potion allowing Michael to create homunculi – magical spirits that can predict the future – in hopes of learning if Clea will return. Lauren Patel co-stars as Kacey, a coworker who befriends Michael, while Crook appears in a small role as the store manager, Gordon.
The show is set in and around suburban Manchester and features Jon Pointing, Paul Kay, and Willan in supporting roles. It garnered the best 28-day launch ratings for a comedy on BBC Two since 2022 and won the International Panorama at Series Mania. ‘Small Prophets’ also incorporates animated elements to depict the magical aspects of the story. The series has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to Apple TV+, ‘Small Prophets’ will “sit comfortably alongside the likes of Ted Lasso,” sharing a similar gentle British sensibility. Treasure Trove Productions and Blue House Productions produced the show, with Mackenzie Crook and Lisa Thomas serving as executive producers for Treasure Trove, and Christine Gernon and Emma Strain as executive producers for Blue House.
