The cooperative first-person shooter *Aliens: Fireteam Elite* was unexpectedly removed from the Nintendo eShop and is no longer playable for owners of the Switch version. According to a report by Ars Technica, players are left with no recourse for refunds despite losing access to a game they legally purchased.
The reason for the removal stems from a licensing issue between Cold Iron Studios and Focus Entertainment, the publisher of *Aliens: Fireteam Elite*. Cold Iron Studios was acquired by Saber Interactive, which then had its parent company acquire 3D Realms. This restructuring led to the termination of the license agreement with Focus Entertainment.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances regarding the licensing of *Aliens: Fireteam Elite*, we are forced to remove the game from sale on Nintendo Switch,” a statement from Focus Entertainment reads. “Unfortunately, this also means that players who have already purchased the game will no longer be able to access it.” The publisher confirmed that refunds would not be issued.
The situation underscores the risks associated with purchasing digital-only games. Unlike physical copies, there is no tangible item retained by the consumer when a license expires or a platform removes content. Ars Technica notes this serves as “a reminder of the perils of digital ownership.”
