Democratic state Senator Aisha Wahab has won the special election for California’s 14th Congressional District, replacing Eric Swalwell, who resigned amid accusations of sexual misconduct. Wahab defeated fellow Democrat Melissa Hernandez to serve out the remainder of Swalwell’s term, which ends in January 2027. She secured 53.1% of the vote, according to the Associated Press, after winning the primary election by 26 points. The race drew significant outside spending, including $4.4 million from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which Wahab overcame to secure victory.
Swalwell’s resignation followed accusations of sexual assault and harassment, which he denies. The partial term for the district concludes in January, after which the winner of the November election will serve a full term. No right-leaning sources reported on the election, but left and lean-left outlets highlighted Wahab’s win as a victory over significant outside spending, while right-leaning sources focused on the amount of money spent by AIPAC in the race.
