After six weeks at the top, Sony Pictures’ *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* faces competition from Warner Bros. Pictures’ *Practical Magic 2*, which debuts in over 4,000 theaters. The sequel, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, aims to surpass the original film’s $46 million domestic gross in its opening weekend.
Warner Bros. projects *Practical Magic 2* will gross between $30 million and $35 million domestically and an additional $18 million to $23 million overseas. The film, directed by Susanne Bier, adapts the work of author Alice Hoffman and centers on the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian, as they attempt to break a family curse preventing them from finding love. Joey King, Maisie Williams, and Lee Pace also star.
Despite mixed critical reception – the film currently holds a 36 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes – *Practical Magic 2* is expected to end *Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s* six-week reign at the box office. However, the Tom Holland-led Marvel Studios film is on track to become the top North American film of all time, potentially surpassing the $936 million domestic total of 2015’s *Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens* this or next weekend.
Also opening this weekend are *Angel’s Runner*, starring Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson; Focus Features’ *The Uprising*, led by Andrew Garfield; and Inaugural’s *The Fix*, with Liam Neeson and Zachary Levi. As critic Angie Han wrote for The Hollywood Reporter, the movie “works better the less you look for any sense of logic, and the more you just lean into the transient joys of watching these [two] actresses bounce off each other.”
