Zheng Qinwen defeated Iga Swiatek in the US Open quarter-finals, continuing a remarkable run that included winning sets from 5-0 down in consecutive matches. The 23-year-old from China overcame a slow start in both sets to secure a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Zheng, who underwent elbow surgery in July 2025 and dropped outside the world's top 100 earlier this year, previously defeated Madison Keys after trailing 5-0 in the deciding set. Against Swiatek, the eighth seed, she recovered from a 5-0 deficit in the first set to win 13 of the next 16 games. She will next face second seed Elena Rybakina, who defeated Naomi Osaka.
This win is expected to move Zheng back to the brink of the top 50 in the world rankings. “The more matches I play, the more rhythm I have on court,” Zheng said. “People have asked me if I'm tired and when I arrived I was not tired at all. I felt really pumped for my match, trying to reach better levels here and enjoy this fantastic stadium.”
Former world number five Daniela Hantuchova commented, “She is starting to be very dangerous for the rest of the players left. I don't want to say she's playing the best tennis out of everyone, but if you have Iga Swiatek panicking on the other side of the court, not knowing what to do, that says a lot.”
Zheng’s only previous win against Swiatek came in the semi-finals of the 2024 Olympics, en route to winning singles gold in Paris. The most recent qualifier to win the US Open women’s draw was Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu in 2021. Poland’s Maja Chwalinska also performed well in a Grand Slam this year, reaching the final of the French Open as a qualifier.
For Swiatek, 25, the fourth-round exit marks a disappointing end to her Grand Slam season. Her best result this year was a quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open. She was defeated in the fourth round of the French Open and the third round of Wimbledon, meaning she will finish the year without winning a major for the first time since 2021.
