Two Iranian films addressing the societal impact of the ongoing war in Iran will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The films, shot surreptitiously, offer on-the-ground perspectives of life under both the conflict and the country’s repressive regime.
Ali Asgari’s “A Bit of Light,” starring Misagh Zareh, follows a doctor who loses faith after being arrested and having his practice shut down. A key scene features the line, “This Trump guy is threatening to bomb here every day…And these window panes are huge. God forbid they should shatter and hurt you.” The film was partially shot in Istanbul after physical production was moved from Iran following the initial U.S. attack in February.
Mohsen Gharaei’s “Falling House” depicts a family facing the destruction of their home due to a redevelopment project. Producer Milad Khosravi, of Seven Springs Pictures, explained that the script had to be “manipulated” to secure filming permits in Tehran. The footage was then transported out of Iran before the war escalated and completed in Germany.
Oscar-winning producer Odessa Rae, who worked on both films, described them as exploring “this feeling of being trapped and what do you do when you’re inside a system where there’s really no way out?” She added, “The regime is a part of the problem, and then the West’s solution becomes the other part of the problem.” Rae noted the films represent “the country’s final spurt of creativity before being battered by the war.”
Khosravi stated the filmmakers aimed to “finish the film in a timely manner, so that it could make an impact.”
