Utopai Studios and DeNA Co., Ltd. have formed a partnership to integrate artificial intelligence into animation production workflows in Japan. The collaboration aims to enhance creative efficiency while maintaining artistic control.
Cecilia Shen, CEO and co-founder of Utopai Studios, stated, “Japan is one of the world’s most important and influential animation markets, and DeNA brings a deep understanding of both its creators and audiences.” She explained that the partnership will “build a model that combines new production capabilities with the artistry, judgment and authorship that define great animation,” and is “an important step for Utopai Studios in Japan and the foundation for a relationship we believe can grow significantly over time.” Utopai’s storytelling AI system, PAI, is already being used by Huace Film & TV in China for the animated series “Journey to the West: The Lost Five Hundred Years,” and on projects in the U.S., Europe, North America and Asia.
The arrangement with DeNA will involve a team of Utopai AI production specialists working alongside DeNA’s creative and production staff. They will contribute to visual concepts, character and environment design, scene planning, and the iterative production process. Minabe Naoki, head of DeNA’s Entertainment Development Business Unit, said animation production demands “an especially high degree of creativity, consistency and attention to detail.” He added that the collaboration will “explore how AI can help create an environment where creators can focus on their craft while making production workflows more efficient,” and “open new paths for Japan’s anime industry to continue competing globally.”
PAI is designed to maintain project continuity across multiple shots, scenes, and episodes. Once a character, background, or design element is approved, the system can carry that asset forward, reducing the need for rebuilding. Use of production materials will be governed by jointly negotiated rules regarding permissions, intellectual property, and security. The partnership is initially focused on an evaluation phase. DeNA, founded in 1999 and listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, operates in mobile games, live-streaming, sports, and entertainment.
