Canonical has temporarily removed the Ubuntu 24.04.5 desktop ISO image after discovering a bug that causes the installer to crash when users select extended installation options. The issue stems from leftover references to the operating system’s TPM-backed full-disk encryption support, which is confusing the Subiquity installer despite the feature’s components being removed.
The fifth point release to Ubuntu 24.04, powered by the Linux 7.0 kernel, was released on September 10. According to Canonical’s Matthieu Clemenceau, the release team has “identified the problem and is working on a fix.” A new desktop image is expected to be available early next week.
Only the standard amd64 Ubuntu desktop image is affected; other images, including those for Arm64 and Ubuntu flavors, remain available for download. Users needing to install Ubuntu 24.04 desktop can use the Ubuntu 24.04.4 ISO and update to 24.04.5 after installation. Clemenceau also noted that those who have already downloaded the faulty ISO can use zsync to update it once the fix is released, avoiding a full re-download of the approximately 6GB file. The new 24.04.5 ISOs boot with the Linux 7.0 kernel, offering improved support for newer hardware.
