Tom Whitestone, a longtime administrator at UNC Charlotte, passed away Tuesday after battling cancer. He served the university’s athletic department for 37 years, beginning in 1987, and retired in 2024.
Whitestone held the positions of sports information director and associate athletic director for media relations. He was recognized for his dedication to telling the stories of Charlotte’s athletes and was honored with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
He also founded the Charlotte Athletics Hall of Fame, a place to recognize the school’s greatest athletes. The university noted that nearly every inductee acknowledged Whitestone’s contributions during their acceptance speeches. Just this month, Whitestone learned he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame himself during the 2026-27 basketball season.
Whitestone is survived by his wife, Kim, and their children, Sam and Allie.
