AUSTIN – Senior quarterback Arch Manning threw four touchdown passes as the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns defeated Texas State 59-7 on Saturday at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Manning completed 20 of 27 passes for 305 yards and four scores before being relieved in the third quarter by KJ Lacey Jr., who also led Texas to a score.

Manning connected with celebrated transfer wide receiver Cam Coleman twice, and Ryan Wingo and Hollywood Smothers once each. Texas scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions, jumping to a 28-0 lead in the first half thanks to scores from Coleman, Wingo, and a 59-yard fumble return by Graceson Littleton. A potential scoring drive was halted by an interception thrown by Manning into double coverage.

The Longhorns’ defense, now under coordinator Will Muschamp, produced three takeaways, including an interception by transfer linebacker Rasheem Biles, and limited Texas State to 321 total yards and a single touchdown. Texas State’s new kicker, Dylan Cunanan, missed field goal attempts from 24 and 35 yards.

Texas is coming off a 10-3 season and a bowl win over Michigan. Their next game is at home against preseason No. 1 Ohio State, who defeated Ball State 56-3 on Saturday. Texas State, projected to finish between fourth and sixth in the reconfigured Pac-12, had won three straight bowl games but was outmatched. Smothers opened the game with a 45-yard gain, setting up Manning’s first touchdown pass to Coleman.
