Valve released a new beta update for the Steam client, introducing improvements to Big Picture Mode and several enhancements for Linux users. The update, released tonight, focuses on improving user experience and functionality across the platform.
Big Picture Mode receives a “Big Art Mode” option for the home screen and a new personal calendar integrated into the “Recommended Tab.” Users can now also utilize a new screensaver feature, with support for custom screensavers. Beyond Big Picture Mode, the update delivers general improvements to Steam client startup performance and runtime CPU performance for Steam Input, alongside numerous bug fixes.
Linux users will benefit from improved download speeds on high latency connections. The SteamOS compatibility dialogs will now appear in the desktop UI when installing games not verified for that hardware, and a SteamOS unsupported dialog will also be displayed when installing games known to be incompatible with Proton. Valve has also refined its Linux distribution information collection for the Steam Survey, aiming for increased accuracy.
The SteamRT3 experimental beta has also received several fixes as part of this update. Further details are available on SteamCommunity.com.
